Pablo Neruda and Temuco

Temuco is where Neruda began his literary career. Here he visited the train station, confessing that he loved the smell of coal, the smoke, the oil and the mechanical precision of the axles. “as time passed I grew, read, fell in love and wrote, between the bitter winters of Temuco and the mysterious summers of the coast”.

Temuco

Enchanted by the beauty of its hills and its river, on 24th February 1881 Manuel Recabarren created Fort Recabarren or Temuco. The creativity and energy of the city’s inhabitants transformed it into the regional centre of southern Chile. The growth of Temuco was permanently linked to the arrival of the railway, marking our social, economic and political life and forging the destiny of the capital of La Araucanía Region.
